This painting is one of a number of studies for the Magdalene for Gollon's 'Stations of the Cross. In this painting, the artist has chosen to imagine Mary Magdalene in her previous life as a courtesan, before meeting Jesus. Yet the Cross around her neck hints at that future influence, and the way she holds the arrow that also points to that, perhaps shows her acceptance of her fate.
