House of Sleep
This exhibition showed 25 new works by Chris Gollon at Thompson's Gallery, Marylebone, London W1. Separate to the paintings, a DVD Chris Gollon made with JABOD may also be viewed.
An art critic* once described Chris Gollon as “a masterful inventor of images”. Thompson’s Gallery are delighted with this introductory exhibition of recent paintings, since it shows a varied range of Gollon’s unique imagery.
The same art critic also remarked that Gollon has a keen sense of the ridiculous, preventing his paintings from falling into pathos. His work often veers to the darker side of life, but like that other master of the dark side, Paul Klee, who also looked at Aristophanes and Shakespeare, few understand better how comedy and humour can help to imply a message. The works show great concern for the human condition. The title piece for the exhibition (pictured above) is loosely based upon ‘The House of Sleep’, the kingdom of Morpheus, (hence morphia, morphine etc.), the god of dreams. Morpheus is there, albeit a modern interpretation; but if we are searching for logical possibilities, Gollon’s work is not the place to look. His fascination is with the absurdity of existence.
